Grow comes to Athens!
Figured that sitting and waiting for rice to cook is as good a time as any to write a quick post.
I have some exciting news to share! *drum roll* And it's definitely another "pinch me, I must be dreaming" moment.
This year, 2015, Grow Appalachia is funding a site in Athens, Ohio. For those of you that may not know me, Athens just happens to be my hometown! When I was asked back in November to sit in on the proposal review/decision-making process, I imagined we would receive all sorts of proposals. I simply could not believe it when I came across the address/contact information for the Community Food Initiatives program and it turned out to be based in Athens! I practically begged my supervisors, "We have to fund this site!" After numerous back-and-forth emails, we decided to fund them, as well as five additional sites joining us this year. From what I know about Community Food Initiatives, or CFI, they are very involved in community gardens, school gardens, seed saving, and educational workshop projects throughout Athens County, as well as a few other surrounding counties. With our grant, they'll be able to expand and build what is already in place! You can find out more about them on their website, which shares what they do much better than I'm managing to.
Y'all have NO IDEA how excited I am about this! Bonus: my parents are excited too, and when I shared the news with them this past weekend, they told me they would be more than willing to get involved and volunteer with any projects that may come about! I'm hoping we'll get some field work in there this year; I would love for my team to see where I come from. Ok, so maybe I'm a little bit biased, but still. Don't judge too harshly!
My home and my work, coming together. It's a beautiful thing! :)
