The gathering that came and went, REAL cold, and the Snowpocalypse

Has it really been almost a month since my last post?  Geez Louise.

Been a wild week, that's for sure.  For starters, Berea was graced with approximately a foot of snow that began Sunday evening and continued all Monday, resulting in the college closing both Monday and yesterday.  Let me briefly describe just how much of a rarity this is: When I was a student the college only closed once.  ONE time in four years, and that was already two days into the 2009 ice storm.  Since graduating, the college has closed, if you include Monday and yesterday, three more times, so that's 4 times total!  Anyway, back to the Snowpocalypse: needless to say, this snow ain't going nowhere!  I was walking home today, after spending a couple hours in the office and then working from home, and there were drifts waist-high.  Now, I'm a pretty short lass, but still.  I will say this: In the almost seven years since I've lived in Berea, I don't think I've ever dealt with this much snow!  EVER.  I'm ready for spring.

Quick detour, and this is for my Facebook friends: I posted last week that I had some awesome news.  I'll keep a long story short: I and my other VISTA-in-crime had the opportunity to talk shop with the CEO of the CNCS (Corporation for National and Community Service...basically the mothership of all things AmeriCorps, headquartered in Washington freaking DC) at an event that ended up getting postponed because of crappy weather.  So, that's that.  Hopefully it'll happen when it gets rescheduled.  Stay tuned!  I was looking forward to the event, and as bummed as I was that it didn't happen...man, I'm glad for it in the long run.  Being stuck in Pikeville would have been the pits.

Now...cold.  I'm from southeastern Ohio, and I grew up without central heat/air, so we had a wood furnace to heat the house.  Which is great, because once you get it warm, it stays warm...until the fire goes out.  I've woken up to it being 53, 55 in the house, so it's pretty chilly.  But Y'ALL.  Supposed to have crazy wind chills tomorrow, possibly as low as -20.  WHAT THE CRAP?  That's REAL cold.  As much as I would like to reply to the email just sent out from the college...I really don't think it's a grand idea to send folks out into this.  I sort of wish the college would just close, but I don't foresee that happening....so....praise the Lord for the inventor of fleece-lined leggings!

Onto some actual Grow App stuff.  I did mean to write about this, but ya know, life: Earlier in the month we had our annual gathering.  Last year, because of (you guessed it!!!) crazy winter weather, there were only about 30 folks that showed up.  This year we had more than 70!  I didn't even get a chance to chat with everyone! It was so much fun hearing everyone's stories about the work they're doing in their respective parts of Appalachia.  Plus, I finally have faces to emails, faces behind the authors of blog posts, and it's really great, actually :) Looking forward to thawing out and hopefully doing some more traveling and such, but in the meantime...I am entertaining the idea of possibly working from home tomorrow again!

Stay warm!

Here's a group shot from the gathering.  Great bunch! :)
