Some pictures...and a podcast?

Howdy doody readers! Can you believe it's already almost the halfway point of July? I'm afraid I've dropped the ball on pretty much all of my blogging duties, including the blog I co-write with my sister. We haven't forgotten- life just has a way of sneaking up on you sometimes. Plus, we are in the process of working out the last kinks of moving (!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and she leaves for Peru in three weeks! Yes, three! And lastly, things are shifting around in both my professional and personal life and I'm looking forward to what the future holds :) SO ANYWAY...I wanted to share a few things.

First off, here are a few pictures from the VISTA 50th event that took place in Berea a couple of weeks ago. I wrote about it here.

Top is me (front and center, literally) with some of the other VISTAs in my program, and also with Paul Monteiro, who is the director of the VISTA program. And by director, I mean, he is the top, basically.  Really, unbelievably nice guy.  Got to talk to him briefly...which brings me to the bottom picture.
Disclaimer, and I'm only saying this because I've been asked: I was not aware that this picture was being taken. So I'm sure you can imagine my surprise when I checked my email one morning and, lo and behold, I clicked on the email I had from the CNCS and there I was! Wee bleep! This was at the Laurel County Grow App garden site, where I got to talk about my VISTA work. It was a humbling opportunity, to say the least, and I am fortunate that this VISTA movement is gaining more positive attention and momentum. It certainly needs it! All right, getting off my soapbox now...

And finally, one last tidbit to share. Remember how I got to talk to a reporter? She ran an entire story on local food and food deserts and she featured Grow Appalachia! I've posted the link below: The entire episode runs just under an hour, and you can hear about Grow App at about 14 minutes in, with a small blip from yours truly at about 18 minutes in.  Enjoy!

Inside Appalachia podcast: Local food and Grow App

Honestly, I've been a little overwhelmed by all the attention I and my work is receiving. I don't like to have the spotlight on me. I'm a VISTA: we work "behind the scenes".  But I've learned a thing or two about humility during my VISTA year, and sometimes you have to shake hands with a lot of different people, smile and say "Thank you for giving me a chance to try to make even just a small difference."

Six weeks until the end, y'all!!!
