How I find rest

Y'all, I was tired last Friday. Like, I-could-have-gone-to-sleep-anywhere tired.  I'm choosing to blame it on the gray and cold that seems to have been around for eternity. Even though I don't get done with work until 4:30, all I wanted to do was go home and cuddle up on the couch, wearing some fuzzy socks with a blanket and maybe a cat. It was a deep physical weariness, and I know once I got home and rested, I would be feeling awesome in no time.

Rest is really important, especially in our breakneck speed pace of a society we seem to find ourselves in. We seem to glorify busy and jam-packed schedules. I remember right after J and I got married, we moved, and it was such a stressful time. We were going nonstop for days! We were short with each other, grumpy, irritable, easy to anger....while we were supposed to be enjoying the newlywed days. It wasn't pretty. Now that we have a year of marriage under our belt we've learned how important it is to have time to wind down and rest, individually and together.

We joined a "book club" towards the end of last year, three couples reading a book and meeting once a week for some really awesome discussion. Part of the book we last read talked about rest, specifically a sabbath; that is, taking time to rest and partake in activities that refresh your spirit and bring peace. So, what does that look like for me?

  • Taking time to pray in the car on my way to work
  • Writing in my journal
  • Watching movies or a TV series with J (We're currently into House and finishing up Frasier)
  • Going on a walk
  • Playing board games with J (We're really into Exploding Kittens)
  • Naps! Especially ones after church
  • Cooking. I especially love making soup and curry!
  • Taking a really long shower for no particular reason
  • Having a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning, still in comfy clothes
  • Participating in life group through our church. Seriously, Sunday was not a great day, but after hanging out with our life group, I felt SO MUCH better!
  • Reading
  • Talking to my family
Get out of the busy routine and do something restful, for you! It's not only good for you, it's biblical! Even God rested on the seventh day; that has to count for something when it comes to importance.

I am very much looking forward to a week of rest next week, for spring break! Not that it's been terrible, but it could not have gotten here soon enough 😊
