God is still in control
Last week, I was on spring break, which means a week off from work. I rested, I got to see my seester and my bestie, I picked up a long ago started knitting project, I started running again, I watched a lot of Blacklist and movies with my hubby, I had some lunch dates and a coffee date with hubby, oh, and the usual house chores. Because why not get ahead when you're home during the week? :)
It was only a five day break, but those five days felt like 5 weeks, to be honest. A LOT happened. This coronavirus stuff is NO joke. It all started on Monday, when Berea College announced they were ceasing all academic instruction after March 13, and March 14 was move-out day for students. UK and U of L announced they were moving to all-online instruction starting immediately, with many other schools nationwide following suit; EKU is starting all-online instruction next week, while taking this week to make the transition. Everyone bought up all the toilet paper. Seriously?! I still don't understand that one. It wasn't long after that that the announcement came for all KY schools to close effective today, followed by the announcement that churches suspend services for the weekend. We at Eastside Community put on a live stream to an empty sanctuary yesterday....It was actually pretty fun and we drank way too much coffee. Then the CDC recommended no public events of more than 50 for at least the next 8 weeks.
Today, I'm back at work, but it's a ghost town, to put it mildly, and just a few hours ago, the governor of Kentucky announced all KY bars and restaurants to close in-person dining starting this evening, until further notice.
It. Is. Crazy!
I told my husband several times last week that I felt like I was watching a post-apocalyptic movie. Walking across a mostly-empty parking lot this morning was surreal. Reading about local favorites in Berea closing is pretty surreal. The empty sanctuary at church yesterday was surreal. I imagine our date nights are going to look a little different, but we'll most definitely make it work. I'm pretty thankful for online classes, and the technological means for students to be able to continue their education without any serious negative ramifications. Most importantly, I am thankful for my health, and for grocery store workers. Seriously!
In all of this, though, one message has reigned supreme: God is in control! I'm not going to lie, there is a lot of uncertainty. I had some anxiety about coming back to work today. But I've been praying for peace. The crazy thing about all this coronavirus is that God knew it was going to happen! He did! I see this as an amazing opportunity for all of us who claim to follow Christ to be the light, to show hope in the midst of despair, to show light in a time of darkness, to show joy in the midst of sadness, to show peace and calm in the midst of fear, and to most of all, show FAITH. God's got this, He's got us.
Stay healthy, everyone! Get some take out for dinner this week. Pray. Watch some Netflix. And wash yo hands!
