The great snowstorm of 2022
Y'all, I'm sure what took place yesterday is going to be right up there with the 2009 ice storm! It. Was. In. Sane.
So I've lived in Kentucky long enough to know that more often than not, sometimes the weather man, God love him, gets a liiiittle too hype about snow forecasts and we usually end up with a coating or a few flurries, nothing substantial. I've long operated under the mantra of, "I'll believe it when I see it."
However, we got some pretty nasty weather last February- snow and ice. So there was that.
Earlier this week we started to hear whispers of the big S word. Of course totals were hypothesized this way and that, most averaging somewhere in the 2-5inch range. I thought, Okay, cool! Wednesday afternoon and evening schools and businesses started putting out announcements for closings or delays, and I had hoped that EKU would follow suit. Alas, they did not, and so at 5:30am Thursday morning Justin and I got up and got ready for what was, by all accounts, just another work day.
And then the snow started!!
I have a really big window in my office and so I could see it coming down, slow at first but by 11am it was coming down and it was coming down FAST. With the temperatures well below freezing as well, I started to get a little worried about driving home at the end of the work day. Alas, not too long after, EKU sent out emails and texts moving us over to Plan A (remote) starting at noon. With only 45 minutes to go I was still worried but thought it would be okay.
I left just a little after 12, and I was really not prepared for what I saw! I've truly never seen anything like it at all! For the most part, the bypass that runs through Richmond was okay, but everyone was just moving slowly, which was just fine with me. I inched along until the interstate and then I just started praying hard, because the interstate was totally covered!!! Driving 20-30 mph on a 3-lane interstate that was solid white with snow coming down and coming down, no way to see the lines, is not something I wish to repeat ever again. It was actually kind of surreal....driving on an all-white interstate. But it was definitely scary! Very scary. By the grace of God, just driving slowly and praying, I made it home, at about 1:10. A normally 15-20 minute commute took an hour.
From what I saw, though, it was just in the nick of time. Roads didn't really get better and pretty soon parts of the interstate became parking lots! Lots of side streets closed. It was really like something out of a disaster movie. Some folks were stuck for 9-12 hours!! Can you even begin to imagine that?
Meanwhile, Justin was still in Lex and so I was updating him on the interstate conditions, which, as I mentioned, was basically a parking lot. In the end, a very gracious co-worker offered him shelter for the night. I'm so, so thankful!! He'll have to get home somehow but hopefully later today conditions will have improved.
Today, I'm working from home, and I'm so fortunate to be able to do that. I know it is a luxury not everyone has. Our neighborhood's roads still look like crap and my car is pretty much snowed in. But I'm okay, my hubby is okay, my family and friends are okay. Plus, working from home means jammies and all the coffee I want!! :)
I know we'll be talking about this for a looong time. But I'm glad it's over! God is so, so good for keeping us all safe. I know it could have been so much worse.
Here's a few pics I snapped around my apartment. Stay warm! I think I would like another cup of coffee soon...
